The Gateway to Gunung Leuser

Welcome to Bukit Lawang: Where the Ancient Rainforest Meets the River

Nestled along the rapid waters of the Bohorok River in North Sumatra, Bukit Lawang is world-renowned as one of the last remaining sanctuaries where the critically endangered Sumatran Orangutan (*Pongo abelii*) thrives in natural primary rainforest.

Beyond orangutans, our jungle trails shelter Thomas leaf monkeys, white-handed gibbons, hornbills, and thousands of medicinal flora species. Exploring this pristine wilderness requires mindful planning, experienced guidance, and deep respect for fragile ecosystems.

Our Ethical Orangutan Observation Pledge

In Explore Bukit Lawang, we strictly advocate for non-intrusive wildlife encounters. Human interaction alters wild primate behaviors and introduces infectious pathogens. We take active responsibility in preserving their home.

Strict 7-Meter Rule: Visitors maintain a minimum distance of 7 to 10 meters from all primates at all times.
Zero Feeding Policy: Feeding creates dangerous dependency and aggressive habits. We never bait or feed wildlife.
Pack In, Pack Out: Every wrapper, bottle, and piece of organic waste is packed back to the village for proper recycling.
Frequently Asked Questions

Planning Your Bukit Lawang Visit

How do I get to Bukit Lawang from Medan?

Bukit Lawang is located approximately 130 km northwest of Medan. Travel by private air-conditioned car takes between 3.5 and 4.5 hours depending on road traffic. Tourist shared vans also depart daily from major Medan hubs.

Are sightings of Sumatran Orangutans guaranteed?

Because Gunung Leuser is an open wild biosphere, sightings cannot be 100% promised, but with seasoned local trackers who know daily feeding routes, chances of observing orangutans and other wildlife in their habitat are very high.

What should I pack for jungle trekking?

Comfortable hiking shoes or rubber trail sandals (Sepatu Capung), quick-dry breathable clothing, high-DEET mosquito spray, sunscreen, a drybag for electronics, and a refillable water canteen.
